Fish Soup with Leeks and Fennel

Having just come back from a two week vacation I was amazed to see how spring had sprung in our absence. Magnolia trees, forsythia and daffodils are all blooming and the sharp edge of the cold has given way to soft rain and the smell of earth and blossoms.

It was a great trip but I am very happy to be home. I always enjoy the lack of domestic responsibilities for the first week or so but then I start to long for the kitchen. To be able to make something that is exactly what you feel like eating and not just the closest thing you can find on the menu. The meditative nature of slicing and stirring and seasoning and tasting as you go. Even the cleaning of the dishes and the wiping of the counters and especially the shopping for the ingredients, I miss it all. Continue reading

Monday evening teabag wisdom

One week of time with my sweet family, and sunshine and walks on the beach and good food and some wine and a Mai Tai or two. Back in one week!

Pierogi making with Baba

My sister Lisa is up from Los Angeles this weekend. She and her boyfriend Paolo were invited to come up to play music and show some of their films at the Cultural Olympiad which is a part of the 2010 Winter Games here in Vancouver. The theme of their evening is “From Russia with Love” and will feature film footage that they shot while travelling in the Ukraine and Russia, some love songs that the two of them will belt out accompanied by some quiet drumming and ukulele playing with a few rounds of Bingo thrown in for good measure. Continue reading

Chocolate Truffles and an Early Gift

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and so this seems the perfect opportunity to pass along a recipe for the occasion. I love the idea of a homemade treat for your sweetheart and while these truffles look impressive they are about as difficult to make as baking a batch of cookies.

It all starts with a basic ganache and I’ve listed a recipe from Ina Garten’s Barefoot in Paris cookbook below. There are, however, infinite variations on this basic truffle theme. Grand Marnier can be swapped out for Framboise or your favourite liqueur, herbs and spices can be added (think cayenne, cardamom, ginger, finely ground Earl Grey Tea or Chai)  and the formed truffles can be rolled in cocoa, confectioners sugar, toasted nuts, white chocolate, sanding sugar… Continue reading

Monday Morning Teabag Wisdom

I like to think that I possess certain positive attributes. I consider myself to be a hard worker, willing to jump in when others need help, determined, things like that. I wouldn’t say, however, that I am particularly calm. And this week poses some additional challenges to me working towards my “highest achievement of the self”.

You see, we are getting ready to go away next Monday. It’s just for two weeks but as a family we are terrible at getting ready for trips. I make a bunch of lists that nobody follows and then I lose the lists and then we all promise that we will be packed at least the day before but end up chucking stuff into a bag three hours before the plane leaves while the taxi waits outside… Continue reading

My Favourite Lentils with Roasted Salmon and Spinach

I just made this for dinner last night and I am once again reminded of how much I love lentils. I know the title to this post should read “Roasted salmon with lentils and spinach” but to me, the lentils really are the star of this dish. They are tender, brothy and fragrant with garlic and leeks and sweet from the carrots and a bit spicy from the crushed chilies. And, in addition to being utterly delicious, they also happen to be super healthy as well. The salmon and sautéed spinach are pretty good too though. Continue reading

Pink Grapefruit Sorbet with a Gin and Vanilla Jus

Just a few more wine glasses need to be washed but otherwise there is almost no sign of the big event yesterday. I only have a few photos to post as we were pretty busy with the prepping and cooking and serving so no real time to photograph the food as it was flying out of the kitchen!

Jessica and Ken had invited their six closest friends and hadn’t told them they were getting married just that they were going out for a special dinner. Not everyone in the group even knew one another but by the evening’s end lots of laughs and stories had been shared. Continue reading

Tojo’s Marinated Sablefish with Garlic Spinach

Ken and Jessica are getting married tomorrow.  Here at my house. And while I have about a million things I still need to check off my to do list I did want to share a recipe for the first course of tomorrow’s dinner. Plus this allows me to procrastinate regarding a certain bathroom that needs to be cleaned…

I’m hoping to take a bunch of photos of the big event but the prep and cooking may get in the way and so I thought it would be wise to document at least one of the courses in their wedding dinner. Continue reading
