Vanilla Yogurt and Buttermilk Pancakes

On Friday night Max and I took the Sky Train out to visit Glen at work. Because my husband works such long hours and because Max and I have always been made to feel so very welcome at his workplace we have made it a bit of a habit to drop by each week and spend a few hours, hanging around and watching the action.

This past Friday night was a bit different though. After 10 years of working on the same television show the series was finally coming to an end and Glen was filming the last day ever on Smallville. Continue reading

Blood Orange Sorbet with a Cardamom Scented Citrus Salad

Blood Orange Sorbet

I am sorry that I haven’t been around over the past week or so. I was feeling pretty much paralyzed by the many devastating world events that were unfolding. It was tough to do much blogging when my heart was aching over the loss of one person that I knew well who passed away last week and thousands of others whom I had never met who lost their lives, their family members, friends and homes. Continue reading

A Cocktail Party for Jeannot

Polenta Squares with Salsa Verde and Crisped Prosciutto

No recipes today but a few photos taken by my friend Ross of Pink Monkey Studios of a cocktail party we catered last Sunday. It was an afternoon reception for my sweet friend Jeannot in his Chinatown apartment. These images showed up in my in-box on Friday and were the highlight of my day. I love how Ross captured the food and festive feeling of the afternoon that was filled with sparkling sunshine, friends and laughter. Continue reading

Roasted Cauliflower Soup with Paprika and Garlic Croutons

After one sunny, warm spring-like day on Monday and a bit of sunshine yesterday we are now in for a week of grey skies and rainy weather. I am usually unaffected by the rain. I was born and have spent most of my life in Vancouver and so I am used to it, but today I am feeling a bit blue over the prospect of bone chilling rain for the foreseeable future. Continue reading

Clementine and Blood Orange Salad with Fennel, Watercress and Toasted Hazelnuts

It is that time of the year. Spring is supposedly right around the corner but in my heart I know that those first spears of asparagus are still a good two months away. My palate is feeling a bit tired (and somewhat jaded) by the seasonal ingredient options available. I need something light, bright, juicy, and tangy.

Enter the saving grace of the last weeks of winter: citrus fruits. Honey tangerines, ruby grapefruits, Meyer lemons, good old navel oranges, clementines and especially the beautiful, jewel-like blood oranges. Continue reading

Cranberry and Lemon Crumb Bars

This weekend is my mother-in-law Anneliese’s 76th birthday! On Saturday night we are going to host a festive dinner here at our house for the entire family, all 10 of us. There is nothing that Anneliese loves more than to have her entire family gathered around a table sharing a meal together. However, with a teacher, a cinematographer and a pilot as her children, all of whom have busy careers and home lives, getting everyone together is often no easy feat. I am so glad that everyone managed to clear their schedules to be here and celebrate. Continue reading

Roasted Beet Salad with Farro, Feta and Radicchio

We made it back safe and sound from our weekend in Los Angeles and while Glen didn’t come home with a new trophy we did have a really wonderful time anyway.

Glen was thrilled to be able to meet and talk with all of his idols in the cinematography world and Max had a jam-packed, fun-filled weekend with his aunt and uncle. We had some good walks, met up with some old friends, made a few new ones and ate some really wonderful meals. Continue reading

Truffled Macaroni

It is almost Valentine’s Day! Being on a Monday this year made me re-think my plans for a special Valentine’s dinner for the two sweethearts in my life. Things are made a bit more complicated by the fact that we will be away this weekend in Los Angeles and won’t be flying home until mid-day on Valentine’s Day Monday. Continue reading
